Abstract

This research is aimed at analyzing the students' multiple inteligences as one of the new starting point in developing mathematics teaching and learning process. The research involved 237 year-two students from 5 madrasah tsanawiyah (MTs) Kota and Kabupaten Malang. Data was collected both qualitative and quantitatively through documentation, questionnaires, observation, and the result of questionnaires, multiple intelligences tests, and authentic assessment. The results demonstrate that (1) most of the students have the interpersonal and linguistic intellegences, while the other have either logic/mathematic, spatial, musical, kinesthetic or intrapersonal intellegences, (2) students are generally enthusiastic about learning mathematics, yet they still have difficulties in studying it, (3) students are more motivated when they work in groups to do many activities to improve their achievement in the subject, and (4) there is an urgent need of a teaching-learning style that will accomodate the students' multiple intelligences, make mathematics more interesting and engaging, and develop the students' social skills.
