Abstract

This paper discusses the theological thoughts of Abu Hanifah covering the discussions on iman, qadar, human deeds, and khalq al-Qur'an. Abu Hanifah's theological thought is different from that of other schools in several ways. In viewing 'amal, for instance, he is different from Mu'tazilah and Khawārij who have the view that 'amal is a part of iman. Thus, one cannot be considered mu'min if he does not have 'amal. Fuqaha' and Muhaddithin, moreover, have an idea that 'amal is closely related to the perfection on iman. Therefore, a person who does not perform shari'ah may still be regarded mu'min, but his iman is not perfect. According to Abu Hanifah iman does not increase nor decrease. This is the point of difference between Abu Hanifah and Ahmad b. Hanbal who claims that iman may increase and decrease.
