Asas monogami menurut perspektif Muhammad Abduh: studi tentang metode Tafsir Al manar

This work tries to investigate Muhammad `Abduh's point of view of monogamy principle. In dealing with the analysis of the subject matter, the writer bases himself on hermeneutical method by interpreting the Qur'an Surah al-Nisa' verses 3 and 129. On the basis of these two verses, `Abduh maintains that the basic principle of marriage ruled by the Qur'an is monogamy, not polygamy. He further argues that polygamy is not allowed (hardm) by the Qur'an with the condition that husbands are not able to treat their wives justly. Despite the fact that the basic principle of marriage in Islam is monogamy, the majority of Muslim society assumes that the basic principle of marriage in Islam is polygamy. Such an assumption has been the dogma widely believed by the Muslims. This is due to the fact that this principle has been widely practiced by the classical society before Islam.
