Abstract
This research deals with the escatological content of the book Fafirru- ila Allah. This book was written in Javanese pegon by a well-known ulama' of Kediri, East Java, Mundzir Nadzir. This study relies not only on a certain discipline only, but on several disciplines which are interrelated to each other in order for this research can solve problems found out by the researcher. This interdisciplinary methods include philology, codicology, anthropology and sociology of religion. The theoretical assumption this research relies upon is that of Jacques Waardenburgh on the dualism of Official and Popular Religions. Waardenburgh contends that every religion, including Islam, has escatological beliefs. Among the escatological beliefs of the book Fafirru- ad Allah are the story about the coming of Imam Mandi, the return of `Isa bin Maryam, Dajjal the Tier, and Yejlij Majaj. It also mentions the story of the nature of the day of judgement, the rising of the sun from the west, the break of Ka`bah and so many others. It might be that this belief was taken from the Javanese culture before Islam. It is understandable especially because the Syivaic Hindu and Buddhist Mahayana, in fact, have ever dominated Java.
