Abstract

This article attempts at analyzing the fuqaha' conception of mar& in the perspective of modern astronomy, showing the argument used to support it and the calculation of 'nada' according to modern astronomy, and the relevance of matIci in fuqaha's point of view and modern astronomy. The technique of data gathering is done by documentary analysis; that is, by digging, reading and analyzing the information on this issue. The gathered data are then analyzed by descriptive and comparative methods. One of the fuqaha' views which is relevant to the modern astronomy is that of Shaficiyah, both of which admit the limit of mat& to the east of the center of rukyat. The standard of determining the limit of mcktla', in ShafFiyah's point of view, is considered to be very simple and static, namely within the distance of 16 farsakhs189 kms (the distance of which we can make a gap- in salat). Whereas the modern astronomy, in determining the limit of matlat, will see the height of hila7 in the center of rukyat.
