Abstract
Islamic Education in the formal sense was undergone by the Prophet when he received his first revelation, that is QS. Al-’Alaq (96) verses 1-5. The reading command in this Surah is used as a reference in the world of education. It has a meaning that reading is not only in the form of qouliyah verses but also kauniyah verses. Reading is not just reading, but it also covers writing, analyzing, identifying and classifying. By reading someone would be clever. And this has always been the benchmark of educational goals, to educate the nation. Howeever, in Islamic perspective the purpose of education is not only for being smart. More important thing than being smart is to make a man faithful and fear of Allah as what is stated in QS. AlFath (48): 29, QS. Al-Hajj (22): 41, and QS. Az-Zariyat (51): 56. People who believe and feel fear of Allah are those called intelligent one because their faith is what make them have a good character, a clear mind, and good emotions.Thus the goal of Islamic education is to create characterized education which is based on QS. Ibrahim (14): 24-25. Among these goal are (1) Education which builds the correct and strong Aqeedah as well as excellent personality which is based on faith in Allah and His Messenger. (2) Education which gives useful knowledge and guides the learners to always do good things with his knowledge. (3) Education that teaches a noble character and interpersonal skills.
