Abstract

This study is intended to describe the existing phenomenon of an English classroom consisting of mixed-ability adult learners in the context of English as a foreign language. The teacher and the learners are Indonesian native speakers. The data are collected by observation and recording to record the class proceeding, and documentation to obtain the teacher's lesson plan and post-teaching reflections. The data are scrutinized to make some points to describe qualitatively. The study is focused on three aspects of the language class, namely, the lesson, the classroom interaction, and the teacher-learner power relations. The findings show that the lesson implements communicative language teaching where the English teaching and learning process consists of varied communicative activities emphasizing the practice of authentic target language use. The classroom interaction between teacher and learners, and among learners is varied, intensive, and multi-ways. The teacher-learner relationship indicates that the teacher practices both power and solidarity to engage learners in the classroom activities.
Keywords: classroom interaction; communicative language teaching; power and solidarity; varied activities
