Max Weber: etika rotestan dan semangat kapitalisme

This study stems from an assumption that a religious doctrine has great influence on work ethic. Max Weber's Protestant ethic is taken as the object of the study in comparison to Islamic view of work ethic ('amal). This study is intended to answer the questions: 1) What is the essence of Protestant ethic assumed to underlie the spirit of capitalism, 2) How is the historical background of Max Weber's life, 3) How is the comparison between Weber's thought on that matter and that of Islamic rationalists. The data were collected using documentation technique, and analyzed using descriptive, reflective, and comparative techniques. The result indicates that "rationalistic" doctrine brought by Protestant has great influence on the social dynamics of Western society especially in economic matters. The same is also showed by mu'tazilah muslim community who emphasize on rationalistic view bringing about a great success in middle ages.
