Abstract

This article provides a close scrutiny of Ibn Khaldun's political thought as written in his magnum opus. Alugaddimah. It specifically concerns with leadership. Using descriptive, comparative, inductive and deductive analysis, the writer tries to identify his distinctiveness in elaborating the concept of leadership in Islam compared to other Islamic thinkers, such as al-Mawardi, al-Ghazni dan Mawducfi. The leadership, according to him, is a necessity for human being. It is due to the fact that human being is zoon politicon who always involve in the politic. The leadership functions as the one that responsible for existing civility based on shag' at. Such an understanding of the leadership, therefore, needs certain qualifications and has to demonstrate moral and religious values in undertaking one's duty and responsibility of leadership. It also indicates that these best aspects show that the pattern of leadership in Ibn Khaldiin's view is charismatic-relational in which the process of leadership selection is done based on tabrat.
