Education is the key to transforming societies and nations. In the words of the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan: ‘Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family’. Australia and Indonesia have collaborated for many years in the knowledge-building sector as both countries realise the value of Australians and Indonesians working together to solve problems created by ignorance and lack of knowledge in both countries. There have been many exchange programs between the two countries targeting particular groups. One of these programs is the Partnership in Islamic Education Scholarships (PIES) program, a program that targets promising Indonesian academics from the Islamic higher education sector in Indonesia and brings them to The Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra for two semesters to work on their doctoral research projects and deepen their academic skills
